Years ago, Roland Velich set out to prove that Austria’s Blaufrankisch could rival the greatest wines in Burgundy. His entry-level offerings remain some of our favorite pop & pour wines, but his single vineyard, old vines wines stand next to Burgundy’s famously ageable grand cru offerings. The ‘Lutzmannsburg’ bottling comes from a single vineyard of 80 to 110-year-old vines and is powerfully structured and tightly-knit, even with years of bottle age. Hints of redcurrant and raspberry lead to woody herbs, wet stones, and wildflowers. Decant now or age for another decade plus! Stunning, stunning stuff.
